Gesture Drawing

Gesture Drawing

Many artists "warm-up" for drawing by making gesture drawings.  In class we made gesture drawings using animal figurines.  We drew each animal for a minute then changed animals.  The figurines we drew were still, but I am going to give you another challenge.

You are going to create several gesture drawings by viewing animals live (well almost).

The San Diego zoo has live feeds of some of their animal enclosures.  You are going to use the link above to navigate to the elephant enclosure and do GESTURE drawings of the elephants.  You need draw 7 or more. They can be partial.   See my example and watch video below.

Most of you were in class for the gesture lesson, but if not I will remind you that you should:

  • Observe your subject (elephant) for a while BEFORE drawing
  • Draw quickly-thinking about proportions  (head the right size compared to the body)
  • Little details
  • Loose
  • Scribbly
  • You CAN have some outlines (but remember it isn't a contour drawing)

After you make the drawings of the elephants.   View some other live feeds of other animals and make some gesture drawings of them! Do you have animals at home you could draw.
The more you practice the better you get!

There are many other art activities to do on the San Diego Zoo website.
