Watercolor Painting Reflection

In your sketchbook reflect on the process of using watercolors answering the following questions:

What challenges did you face using watercolor paint?

What techniques did you use when painting with watercolors? Also describe important factors that help with the final look of your painting.

Review the Elements and Principles of Design.  Which Elements and Principles are prominent in your painting?

Perspective

Intro to Drawing and Painting

Your next artistic challenge will be to create an acrylic painting that shows your knowledge of perspective. Create the illusion of space by portraying objects and architecture the correct size and proportion.  Create the illusion of space on one and two point perspective in your sketchbook using colored watercolor pencil. In your sketch include the value changes that occur.  We will build upon this drawing.

View the following Document for more information on this lesson:

The paintings below make an impact by including perspective as a key component to design.

Watercolors

Advanced Drawing and Painting

In the last week you should have completed a color wheel and a vocabulary chart using watercolor. This week complete one work of art showing the dry and wet brush technique. Your painting can be a representational still-life, self-portrait or portrait, or an abstract painting of something realistic.  Due Friday 12/11

 Intro to Drawing and Painting

Now that you have been drawing realistic features, trying to create the correct tones in the skin using pencil, now it is time to move away from reality and use an imaginative, expressionistic color scheme.  Why do this?  Because art isn't only about being able to manipulate a medium to represent reality it is also used to express oneself.   During a time when Picasso had experienced loss he created paintings that reflected his mood and used the color blue to accentuate this. The fauvist used many vibrant colors, not necessarily to express happiness or jovial times, but to break away from traditional art.  In the next few classes we will explore color schemes.  Take a look at the work below to see colors used in a non-traditional way. Also review the Color Vocabulary List because there will be an assessment of color terms at the end of the project.

Drawing Portraits...continued

Now that we have studied our own faces, its time to branch out...Choose one of these people, you may recognize them, to draw.  These faces are not straight forward, literally.   Try to show the features correctly, in proportion.  The shape and angle are important as well.  Really examine everything before starting your drawing. Due 12/2  AFTER drawing one of these political figures you finally go draw ANYONE you like!!  It can be a realistic value drawing or a caricature, it is totally up to you. The only criteria it must have some resemblance to the person you are drawing.  Due 12/9

The Art of the Doodle....express your thoughts

Intro to Drawing and Painting

What is a doodle?  Is it daydreaming on paper?  Give it a try.  In your sketchbook start drawing whatever comes to mind. Maybe you want to write some words, draw abstract lines-whatever you like.  You can even talk to a friend while doing this.  Have fun with it, express yourself.

A doodle on a napkin paints a picture...

Jeremy Collins

Artists are fortunate because they are able to express themselves as they create. I really love the way Jeremy Collins shows a feeling of sadness and support in this doodle that has been turned into a print.  He really captures the weight of the grief of the person seated.  The red arms show the connection everyone has to the person seated and how they want to help.  If you would like to find out more about this print and Jeremy Collins check out the following sites.

Drawing Portraits

Student Work 2012

Every artist has the best model to learn how to draw faces...themselves!!!
This week you will begin sketching yourself for homework.  Take your time to study your features.  REALLY observe the shape of each feature, the proportions of your face, the space between each feature.  This sketch is due on Monday Nov. 16.   Use a photograph of yourself or look at yourself in the mirror.

Here are some guidelines to help you understand the proportions of the face and the characteristics of the facial features.

Sketchbook Assignment-Hand Holding an Object

If you have completed your white on black lesson and your elements of design questions then you should take out your sketchbook and begin drawing your hand holding something.  This is more complicated then just drawing our hand (which we have done).   You can begin with a contour or gesture drawing, then add values.  Take a look at some examples below.
