What makes a successful "home" page?

Designing for the Web

As we begin designing our home page for our website we need to understand what makes the home or index page successful?  The home page is the first page a viewer sees so it needs to function properly and be appealing. We will view several websites in class and discuss what elements are making it work or not.  You will then find two websites that you will critique.  One should be an example of a poorly designed site and the other a successful one.  Use the, "Elements of a Successful Website" document as you critique the websites.  View the "Website Critique" document for your complete assignment.

Intro to Acrylics and an Amost White Still-Life

Advanced Painting and Drawing

Link to Eileen Eder's Paintings

Our next challenge will be to paint a still-life that is predominately made up off white objects.  You will be focusing on value changes and how value creates the form of an object.  To find out more about the lesson view the "Painting an Almost White Still-Life" document.

Final Project in Flash

Designing for the Web

Make your final Flash project a personal work of art that reflects your style and interests. Your final project in Flash should include:
  • shape, classic, motion, and/or motion presets
  • sound
  • ActionScript (play button)
  • a point of view and a clear theme
Below are two examples of ways to approach this project (they are works in progress...hopefully they will be finished soon).

Action Script in Flash

Designing for the Web

The movie below is a final flash project created by a student from a previous semester.  In a few weeks you have been introduced to the very basics of what Flash can do.  We have only scratched the service of what Flash is capable of.  ActionScript was added to the file below.  Action Script is a type of code added into keyframes to add action to the movie.  For instance the action makes the movie start when you press the word "play".  Go ahead and press play and see what happens. In your final flash project you will use the same script to start your own movies.

Artist Tom Levy

Advanced Drawing and Painting

I came across Tom Levy's website when searching for examples of still-lifes that have a white color scheme.  I found his work incredibly creative.  Some paintings are very personal, telling his story and the view of the world and others  are classical still-lifes.   Take a look at his website and find the style of artwork you are most intrigued by and write about it in you sketch book.  Describe the artwork and why you like it.

The "Extended" Drawing Assignment

Advanced Drawing and Painting

Artwork from: From Ordinary to Extraordinary by Ken Vieth
I came across this lesson on another teacher's website (thank you Mrs. Briggs).  It connects with the artists and styles we have been studying.  Start by perusing magazines until you find an image that jumps out at you.  Take a portion of that image and place it in your sketchbook (don't glue it down yet).  Extend the images by creating an interesting composition.  Think of the negative and positive space and how both define your sketch.  Create a few different examples of how you can complete this drawing.  After you have a solid composition and creative idea start planning your color scheme.  What mood are you trying to create?  Use either colored pencil, watercolor, and/or ink (or a combination of all three).  Remember to layer your materials to create depth in your piece.  Be thoughtful, creative, and invest yourself in you work!
